Gifted and Talented Program
Overview
GCISD recognizes that some students have the ability to perform at remarkably high levels when compared to other students. These students can come from all backgrounds and have gifts in many different areas. GCISD is committed to providing ways for these students to grow and excel in many areas including:
General Intellectual Ability
Subject Specific Aptitude
Creative and Productive Thinking
Leadership
Higher Level Thinking Skills
Artistic Ability
PROGRAM NOMINATIONS
Teacher and parents may nominate through out school year
PROGRAM ADMITTANCE
A committee will assess each nominated student using the student’s work, the Renzulli Hartman Rating Scale, most recent TAKS test, the Slosson/Oti-Lennon Intelligence Test and the Test for Gifted Sutdents. The committee will evaluate the results and make a determination regarding placement.
ACCEPTANCE or NON-ACCEPTANCE
Parents of all nominated students will be notified in writing of the decision of the committee. Those students who meet the qualifying standards will need permission from their parents to participate in the program.
APPEALS
Parents may appeal a decision in writing within 15 calendar days of the notification letter. The committee will then meet with the parent to explain the rationale for their decision. The parent my bring evidence that could be used by the committee in reviewing the case.
CURRICULUM & INSTRUCTION
The GCISD GT Program tries to provide a broad menu of curriculum and instructional offerings for participating students. Instruction and design will emphasize multiple areas of ability. A few of the offerings are:
