GC School News, April 29, 2009
As you can see below, our spring has been and continues to be busy.
This week @ GCISD:
· We are finishing up TAKS testing this week. Wednesday tests are Reading for grades 4, 6, and 7, and juniors take the Math. Thursday tests are Science in grades 5, 8, 10, and 11, and math for freshmen. On Friday we have a few make-up and special situation tests. Thanks for your help in getting your child to bed on time and sending them to school with or for a good breakfast.
· This Thursday our Kindergarten students take a field trip to Midland for visits to the Fire Station, Children’s Museum, and park. If you have a Kindergartener, please make sure that he or she brings a lunch, 2 drinks, and wears the new Bearkat tshirt.
· Speaking of Bearkat tshirts, reorders for the new shirts are available now through Friday. The shirts are $10 and come in youth small through large and adult small through 3XL. Order forms are available in each office.
Next week:
· Elementary students in grades Kindergarten through two will be taking ITBS achievement tests Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. These tests are important for our primary students, just like TAKS gives us a picture of where our students in grades 3 through 8 are. If you have students in K-2, please make sure they get plenty of rest those days. Thanks.
· Spring sports pictures for JH and HS athletes will be taken Monday, May 4. Your student should have an order envelope if he or she participates in track, tennis, or golf.
· FFA has their district banquet in Greenwood on Tuesday, May 5. Also, the end of the year FFA party is Thursday, May 7.
· Our sixth grade field trip to San Antonio departs next Wednesday, May 6.
· Parents of seniors – the Midland Reporter Telegram is taking submissions for photos, messages, and any other words of wisdom you’d like to pass on. If you’re interested, you can email purple@mrt.com. Submissions are due by May 6 at noon.
· GCHS qualified 6 students for the state UIL meet in Austin next weekend. As a school, we placed 2nd at the regional UIL meet last weekend. Congratulations to our UIL kids!

From the nurse:
Much media attention of late has focused on the flu. Please see below a note from the nurse to keep your child and family healthy this flu season:
Tips from the school nurse to help keep your child healthy and flu-free:
With flu season upon us, it is important that we work together to keep our children healthy. Viruses spread easily among children in schools. By keeping our children flu-free, we benefit the community as a whole. You can prevent the spread of the flu or help your child get better if he/she does get sick by following a few simple steps:
- If possible, you and your child should get a flu vaccine
- Remind your child to cover his/her nose and mouth with a tissue when sneezing and coughing and then disposing of it immediately.
- Have your child wash his/her hands frequently with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds.
- Disinfect frequently touched surfaces and shared items at least once a day.
- Ensure that bathrooms are stocked with soap, hand towels and tissues.
- Teach your child not to touch his/her mouth, nose and eyes.
- If your child is sick and has a fever, keep him/her home until they are fever free for 24 hours to prevent the spread of illness to others.
If you are concerned about your child’s flu symptoms, call your doctor early and call your doctor immediately if your child has a chronic illness.
Common symptoms of the Flu:
- High fever
- Severe headaches
- Muscle and body aches
- Exhaustion
- Dry Cough
Additionally, children often exhibit other flu symptoms that are rare in adults
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
If your child is sent home from school with a fever or flu symptoms then they may not return to school without a doctor’s note.
If you have any questions or would like additional information about preventing and treating the flu, please contact the school nurse at 354-2243 or see the school website at www.gckats.net. Information regarding the recent spread of swine flu may be found at www.cdc.gov/swineflu/swineflu_you.htm.
